What Is Erectile Dysfunction (E.D.)?
Erectile dysfunction (E.D.) is the inability for one to obtain or maintain an erection at a level that is satisfying for sexual performance. Approximately 50% of men suffer from E.D. and about 25% of men under 40 experience E.D. on a regular basis. E.D. can have a negative impact on self-confidence, emotional health, and relationships.
There are a variety of causes of E.D:
|Cardiovascular disease||Recreational drug and alcohol use|
|Depression||Low sexual desire|
|Nicotine use||Certain medications|
Treatment involves assessing psychological and physical factors contributing to E.D. A majority of men will be eligible to try medications that inhibit PDE5 such as tadalafil, sildenafil, or vardenafil. Successful treatment of E.D. improves self-esteem, confidence, symptoms of depression, and sexual relationships.
What is Premature Ejaculation (P.E.)?
Premature ejaculation (P.E.) is defined as ejaculation that occurs sooner than desired, either before or shortly after penetration. P.E. is typically associated with lower sexual self-confidence. This creates more anxiety, making PE worse and possibly leading to E.D.
Treatment for PE includes:
|Squeeze Technique||Quiet Vagina|
|Applying local anesthetic||A variety of prescription medications|
What Is Androgenic Alopecia (Hair Loss)?
Androgenic Alopecia is the most common type of hair loss in men and women.
It’s usually referred to as male or female-pattern baldness. There appears to be a hereditary link for hair loss. In men, the thinning starts in the crown and progresses to the middle of the scalp.
There are a variety of causes of hair loss:
Certain hairstyles that pull the hair
Infections in the scalp
Although there are many products that claim to treat hair loss, there are only a few that have scientific evidence to support that they actually work.
Minoxidil is effective for the treatment of both male and female pattern hair loss. It works by prolonging the duration of the active growing phase of the hair follicle. It’s best to start using Minoxidil as soon as you notice hair loss. Regular daily application is recommended.
Since Minoxidil is applied locally, it is well tolerated. The most common side effect is irritation at the application site. Low blood pressure and heart rate have been reported. If you have any heart conditions please let the doctor know.
5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors (Finasteride, Dutasteride)
These medications inhibit the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, which stops or reverses the progression of hair loss. For maximal effects, regular daily use for 6 months may be required to see reduced hair loss. Noticeable growth is usually achieved after 12 months. If you stop the medication, the hair loss will resume.
This class of medications should not be used by women or handled by women that are pregnant or may become pregnant. The most common side effects are decreased libido, or decreased semen volume, however, these side effects may reduce over time.
There are no significant drug interactions with this class of medication.
