Side Effects

Side Effects

Remember, this medication is just for you. Side effects can occur, but not everyone gets them.

Most common side effects:

  • constipation

  • flatulence

  • bloating

Tums is very well tolerated and most people have little to no side effects.

Uncommon but serious side effects:

  • hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels)

  • hypophosphatemia (low blood phosphate levels)

  • milk-alkali syndrome (rare)

  • severe allergic reaction

Signs and symptoms of milk-alkali syndrome: The milk-alkali syndrome is a rare but serious side effect that can happen if you take too much calcium carbonate and become dehydrated or have kidney problems. It can cause high levels of calcium in your blood, which can lead to kidney damage. If you experience any symptoms of this syndrome, such as a rash, hives, or trouble breathing, seek medical attention right away.

Signs and symptoms of a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis): rash, hives, trouble breathing or swelling of face lips, tongue and/or throat with difficulty swallowing. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention right away.

Contraindications, warnings and drug interactions

Contraindications, warnings and drug interactions

Tums is contraindicated if you have

  • Hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria (e.g., in hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D overdosage, decalcifying tumors such as plasmacytoma, bone metastases)

  • Severe cardiac disease

  • Ventricular fibrillation

  • Calcium loss due to immobilization

Warnings:

  • If you have chronic kidney disease and are taking medication to lower your phosphate levels, talk to our medical team about other options. They may suggest non-calcium-based medications as an alternative or a lower dose of calcium-based medications to avoid potential side effects.

  • If you have a history of kidney stones, talk to our medical team for other options.

  • If you have a condition called hypoparathyroidism and you are taking a lot of vitamin D, you might be at risk for having too much calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia). This can cause problems, so it’s important to talk to our medical team about your options.

Alcohol:

Drinking alcohol can cause heartburn by making the lower esophageal sphincter relax. This is the muscle that connects your esophagus to your stomach. When it relaxes, stomach acid can reflux into your esophagus and cause heartburn. Tums is designed to treat heartburn when it occurs, but it is not intended to be used before or while drinking alcohol to prevent heartburn.

Drug interactions:

Tums may interact with other medications and it is advised to separate Tums administration from other drugs by 2-4 hours.

Tums may decrease the absorption and effect of:

  • calcium salts (e.g. proton pump inhibitors, H2-receptor antagonists)

  • bisphosphonates

  • iron supplements

  • calcium channel blockers

  • levothyroxine

  • phenytoin

  • phosphate salts

  • quinolones

  • tetracyclines

  • Eltrombopag

Drugs that may increase the absorption and effect of Tums include:

  • thiazide diuretics

Taking Tums with digoxin can increase the effects of digoxin on the heart and cause abnormal heart rhythms. Talk to our medical team before taking Tums if you are taking digoxin.

Real people, real results

”The program has stopped my bored snacking - I used to have trouble saying no to treats during the work day and after dinner. Now I’m better able to manage my appetite, and combined with starting to go to the gym and being more careful about what I eat at meals, I’m losing about one pound a week. I’m thinking this is the last diet I’m going to have to do. Hopefully ever.”

E.S., 34, York

"I've lost 30 lbs in the past two months while on the program. It's really easy to inject (and doesn't hurt) and it has completely curbed my cravings. Now I eat to fuel myself. Another 70 lbs to go but I'm feeling excited about my weight loss for the first time."
