Hair loss is most often caused by genetics, stress, or both. It becomes more obvious with age because as we age our rate of hair growth slows, which is why if it starts at earlier ages, it can get missed. If you notice your hair thinning or shedding, regardless of your age you should start treatment. The earlier the intervention, the better your chances to keep that head of hair. And no matter when you start treatment, consistency is key. Daily use of your treatment, or use as instructed by a medical professional, will see the best results.
Good news! Minoxidil slows hair loss and stimulates hair growth for roughly 62% patients, and finasteride slows or stops hair loss for nearly 90% of patients while also causing hair re-growth for about 66%! In other words: yes, hair loss can be slowed, stopped, prevented, and in some cases even reversed.
Keep in mind: neither of these treatments is a cure. They must be used regularly to have effect, and if stopped, the hair loss will return. Healthy hair growth is also a slow process, so it’ll be hard to spot change until at least 3 months of consistent use. Don’t give up: when it comes to beating back hair loss, patience is key.

Side effects for either minoxidil or finasteride when used for hair loss treatments are uncommon, and in both cases any side effects will disappear once you stop taking the medication.
Both these medications can be used to treat other ailments: if researching side effects yourself, make sure you’re looking at the types intended for hair loss.
Minoxidil: in rare cases minoxidil can irritate the skin, making it red, dry, and/or itchy. If this happens, book an appointment with one of our doctors and you may be prescribed a lower dosage, or moved to a different treatment. It’s also very good at encouraging hair growth, so make sure you’re not getting it anywhere you don’t want hair!
Finasteride: side effects found in clinical trials for finasteride have been rare, and may include: headaches, or a rash. If either occur, book an appointment with one of our doctors to discuss next steps.
Please note: sometimes people report increased hair shedding the first few weeks or so after starting treatment with either medication. Don’t worry: this hair loss is temporary, not permanent.
Experts believe this happens because the hair’s growth cycle is being reactivated, and it causes dead hair to shed to make way for new growth. It shows the medication is working, so if this happens: stay the course!
Our medical team’s review of your tests may be covered if you have a health spendings account (HSA). You can check with your plan provider about your HSA for more info.
TRT treatment may also be covered by your insurance. Coverage varies depending on your plan type, ranging anywhere from 10% to 90% coverage. Once your TRT prescription is processed by the pharmacy, a team member will reach out to you to discuss how much is covered.
