Topical Treatments
Minoxidil
Minoxidil is effective for the treatment of both male and female pattern hair loss. It works by prolonging the duration of the active growing phase of the hair follicle. It’s best to start using Minoxidil as soon as you notice hair loss. Regular daily application is recommended.
Since Minoxidil is applied locally, it is well tolerated. The most common side effect is irritation at the application site. Low blood pressure and heart rate have been reported. If you have any heart conditions please let the doctor know.
Oral Treatments
5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors (Finasteride, Dutasteride)
These medications inhibit the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, which stops or reverses the progression of hair loss. For maximal effects, regular daily use for 6 months may be required to see reduced hair loss. Noticeable growth is usually achieved after 12 months. If you stop the medication, the hair loss will resume.
This class of medications should not be used by women or handled by women that are pregnant or may become pregnant. The most common side effects are decreased libido, or decreased semen volume, however, these side effects may reduce over time.

There are no significant drug interactions with this class of medication.
